Hotel hisory
The Giuseppe Hotel opened in 2000 in the ancient building of early 19th century built in late classical style. In the 1840-s architect Korinfsky, by order of merchant Akchurin, converted the building into furnished rooms, and later the place began to be called the ‘France’ Rooms.
The ‘France’ was considered to be the best hotel of its time being situated on the best Kazan Street – Voskresenskaya (nowadays Kremlyovskaya Street). There were 49 guest rooms.
On the ground floor, just under the rooms, there was Antonov’s confectionery; everyone could taste the best quality sweets, cakes and pastries there.
It is known, that in the summer of 1846 N.A. Nekrasov, the famous Russian poet, stayed in the ‘France’ during his visit to Kazan. Here also stayed writer Ivan Goncharov, while returning from the round-the-world voyage on frigate ‘Pallada’. Vladimir Korolenko, being the staff writer for the Kazan newspaper ‘Volga Bulletin’, stayed in the ‘France’ too. Interestingly, the editorial office of the newspaper was situated in the neighboring Alexandrovsky arcade. The apartments were also popular with the doctors who came continually to Kazan to see their patients.
In 1915 M. Grushevsky, the first president of the Ukraine People’s Republic, stayed here. Nowadays, in honor of this event, you can see a memorial tablet on the building opened on September, 16 2006.
Today the building of the Giuseppe Hotel is a historical and cultural sight of Republican significance.
